Malaria Treatment FAQ:

Is it safe to take malaria tablets 1 day after getting a Hepatitis AB shot? I think I read that cannot be done for some reason. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks indeed.

I suppose you could have spoken to a doctor or pharmacist.

By “malaria tablets” just what do you mean? Antimalarials may be taken as a prophylactic (preventive) or as a treatment but because you’ve included hep AB (Twinrix) in your question, I figure you’re talking about travel vaccinations. You should have completed the Twinrix about 4 weeks prior to travelling so that your body has time to produce adequate antibodies. It’s given in a series of 3 injections over 6 months. It can also be given in an accelerated schedule of 3 in one month. Antimalarials are taken shortly before traveling. Malarone and doxycycline are started 1-2 days before travelling into areas with malaria and chloroquinine and mefloquine are started 1-2 weeks prior.

It’s the typhoid and paratyphoid orals that contain a live strain that cannot be taken within 12 hours of antimalarials

Yes, it is fine to take malaria tablets after a hep AB shot.

What you need to avoid is taking malaria tablets after an ORAL typhoid vaccine.

The reason for this is that the oral typhoid vaccine (but not the injectable one) is a live vaccine that contains live bacteria.

The malaria tablets will kill the bacteria in the oral vaccine, and render it useless.
