What happen in endemic malaria region is that the people there get malaria some especially the children will die. After several attacks the individuals get fewer and fewer attacks until they are immune. But the immunity does not last for ever. If they were to move to a region where there is no malaria, live there for several years and then return to the malaria regions, they will get a severe attacks of malaria.

So if you are not from a malaria endemic region even with strong immune system you will have a severe attack at first and without treatment it could be fatal. If you were to remain in that region, you will undergo the same cycle as the indigenous people until you develop immunity like them. The immune system does not operate in a vacuum.
