The same reason cystic fibrosis was designed to protect from cholera and BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutants protect from ancient retroviral infections.
It is a much better example of Evolution not intelligent design.
Well I have sickle cell trait will that protect me from Malaria, eventhough I don’t think I will come in contact with it anytime soon.
