Malaria Treatment FAQ:

My sister mentioned that there’s a small note about it in her biology book. Why is that so?

Absolutely true. Because sickle cell people have a genotype which is resistant to malaria virus !

Malaria is a parasite that lives inside red blood cells. They prefer cells with normal adult hemoglobin. In individuals with sickle cell anemia, the rbc’s don’t support high-level replication of malaria parasites. But people with SSA are pretty sick already. The real story is people with sickle cell trait. These are people who have one sickle cell hemoglobin gene, and one normal hemoglobin gene. Their rbc’s have half normal hemoglobin, and half sickle cell hemoglobin. They don’t get sickle cell anemia, and are more resistant to malaria.
