Sickle cell anemia exists because malaria is so prevelant in africa that the locals adapted their blood (through natural selection) so that it is in a shape that it is unaffectd (or at least not mortally effected) by the parasite.

The price for being immune to malaria-inefficent ability to move red blood cells (and therefore oxygen) to the body’s cells.
