Malaria Treatment FAQ:

DDT is a medical invention that kills disease caring insects dead, instantly, and yet is totally harmless to human beings. In fact, scientists who advocated for it would eat spoonfuls of the pesticide at public events to prove it’s safety.

But birds would eat the mosquitos and die thus the liberals with their godless world view only see man as another animal and decided the birds should win. Hey, rich white liberals might want to go bird-watching some day. These environmentalists are really looking out for us; aren’t they?

How’s it out there in left field?

NoObama 06.05.09 at 12:34 pm

If all the birds die, who will eat the rest of the bugs? Then we got a whole mess of a new problem. Think!

Typical Liberal “unforeseen consequences” It’s all about the intentions and not the results!

Fretless 06.11.09 at 10:18 am

I don’t know why you’re not supposed to talk about it. It seems like an imagined restriction dreamed up by a paranoid mind. You can talk about anything you like… Free speech and all.

DDT is not a “medical invention” it is a pesticide and it hs dire effects upon avian and aquatic animals, as well as mammals, many of which are more effective in controlling insect pests than the pesticides…

Because the endangered condor is much more valuable than thousands of children.

Because animals are more important then people.

Are these the Africans that you claim to be scientifically proven less intelligent?

Typical simplistic Republican thinking.

Ever hear of the food chain????

If you kill all of the birds, you kill all of the animals that eat the birds, and all of the animals that eat them.

Pretty soon you have killed all of the wildlife, i.e. THE FOOD.

This is why Republicans play checkers and not chess.

No one is to know about things like that. To a liberal, humans (that are not modern liberals) are scum of the earth that only want to destroy the planet.

lol, your funny. were the ones who started the wrong war..

Dude…I’m a lib and I support 100% mosquito nets treated with DDT to be used in developing countries. Your blatant ignorance of what liberals believe is striking. No…scientists were NOT eating spoonfuls of the stuff, however. It is a carcinogen and does cause cancer at higher doses. For example, a study of malaria workers who handled DDT occupationally found an elevated risk of cancers of the liver and biliary tract. That said, that is at a much higher level than is necessary to treat a mosquito net. You have no clue what you are ranting about and would serve your cause by doing the slightest bit of research. Heck, even the NY Times who the cons love to **** on has supported DDT in mosquito netting for developing countries. Instead of blaming and shouting accusations, perhaps you could ask a legitimate question and actually see how people feel about this issue.

We don’t talk about it for the same reasons we don’t talk about how it is potentially harmful to humans and other local wildlife.

I think it’s very easy to look at something from only one point of view. If all the birds die out, then there would be millions more mosquitos to kill, since birds eat a lot of them. In addition, birds also eat a lot of other insects, which we would then have to deal with because their natural predator had been killed off. Nature has created its own balance, as we have learned to our dismay when we have interfered in the past. Consider for instance the earlier laws encouraging the killing of wolves, only to have to come in later and repopulate the wolves because the deer and other animals were overrunning the place.

There are other ways to kill mosquitos than DDT. I want you to think for a while about the consequences of a birdless world.

I also think you need to reconsider your opinion that this is a “Godless world view”. Do you think God would be happy with us killing the birds?

PANAMA….we put tons of ddt into panama when we built the canal…it could not have been done without it….but,of course panama has no animal or plant life of any kind, does it?

You cannot get extremist environmentalists to see the ludicrosity of their actions. They aren’t big-picture oriented enough. There are many examples of humans messing with the natural order of things and causing bigger problems than the ones they allegedly fixed.

From the seal overpopulation causing the salmon shortage, threatening the indigenous peoples who survive on salmon, to the deer slaughtered in the roads and highways, causing auto damage, injuries and even death to humans.

The problem is the basic philosophy of the value of human life. Once humans are reduced to mere animals, people cannot differentiate which life is more valuable.

who said you couldn’t discuss it. but the bottom line is that DDT does more harm than good.

xaxorm 07.14.09 at 12:12 pm

DDT was used, went out of use for a time by scientific consensus, and now it is in use again, in Africa. At some points in time, Mosquitos have been shown to be resistant to DDT in areas where it was used widely. It’s not the worst toxin, but it is harmful when it conecntrates through the food chain, as it does. So, we need to weigh the costs and benefits. There are many ways to combat insect-born diseases like Malaria. DDT is one of them.

People, like us now, talk and write about these issues all the time, so …?

Gen. Stiggo 07.16.09 at 3:32 pm

You shouldn’t talk about it because it isn’t true, and talking about it makes you look stupid. Yes, DDT is not used much in the third world, but it was only banned here in the US. Yes, some groups won’t or wouldn’t fund anti-malaria efforts that used DDT. But all available evidence shows that the alternative efforts were at least as effective as using DDT, so the claims of any deaths as a result of not using DDT are blatant lies.

P.S. You really need to do a little more research into the problems with DDT, as you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.

Did you know that people with sickle cell anemia are immune to malaria? And that the majority of people who suffer from this blood disease are of African descent? Didn’t think so. Welcome to evolution….don’t mess with it!
